- In 29 BC the Roman consul Statilius Taurus built an amphitheater in the Campo de Mars, the first large amphitheater in the city.
- The original name of the Colosseum was Amphitheater Flavium (Flavian Amphitheatre), and it was given that name because it was built in the reign of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, after the reign of Emperor Nero.
