THE LACK OF SPACES IN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN PLAYA SAN JUAN

BY: I.C., and A.S. - Year5B

We have spoken with the teachers of CEIP el Faro, even with the director and they all agree that our school has good facilities, although there is a lack of recreation areas, multipurpose rooms and some have even said laboratories and assembly hall.

We all need a vital space, even the tutors, which is why it is detrimental that there are so many students per class, having only one tutor, for an average of 27 students.

Many people believe that if more schools were built, the ratio would drop and that is why protests have begun. The first measures that have been taken are to hold a demonstration, create a poster, speak with the city council, in addition to bringing together nine AMPAS from the San Juan area and try to get the council to listen to them and take action on it.

Sara our secretary told us that when it was founded, the school was designed for about 300 primary students and about 120 for infants, although we are currently 485 students, about 65 more students than expected, which means 2-3 more groups, classrooms and tutors are needed.

It is also recommended that there be approximately twenty students per class, although in our school there are groups of twenty-seven students, like the sixth graders, and others of eighteen like some first graders.

In conclusion, this situation cannot and must not continue as it is, or everything will be destabilized.
